Volunteers
The experience of a volunteer
A GiveReads volunteer is asked to treat other people’s children as readers, not as props. That means sorting damaged copies out of a donation pile, labeling cartons clearly, and accepting that some days the work is entirely warehouse work.
When volunteers do meet children, the instruction is simple: sit at their level, let them choose the book, and do not narrate their poverty for a camera. The experience worth having is the quiet one—the page turning, the question asked, the teacher taking over.
